Grand Opera House, Belfast

We welcomed the commission from Tracey Brothers to be involved in the £12.2 million restoration and development of the Grand Opera house in the heart of Belfast. This historic Grade A listed building first opened in 1895 and later an extension in contrasting style to the main building in 2006.

With funding from The National lottery heritage fund, Department for communities, Arts council for Northern Ireland, Foyle foundation, Garfield foundation and the Wolfson Foundation, came the reimagination of the 2006 extension to make it more sympathetic to the original Matcham building.

Involving “a major remodelling of the foyer and public spaces with the centrepiece being a dramatic eye catching helical staircase.”

We enjoyed the task of designing and installing our signature, gravity defying, floating, in situ concrete Staircase. The bespoke installation incorporated over 1 ton of steel reinforcement and around 9 cubic metres of concrete, that’s approximately 20 tons in total!
